PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)

PECS is communication system which uses pictures to teach expressive communication and social skills. It is often used with students who are non-verbal or have difficulty expressing themselves through speech.

As students develop their communication skills, this can lead to a reduction of other challenging behaviours, as they are able to communicate their wants effectively. PECS is not a replacement for speech for students who have some speech, and has been proven to aid speech development.

Having consistency of communication methods at home and school can have a positive impact on students’ communication skills. If you are interested in learning more about introducing PECS at home, please speak with your child’s teacher and we will be happy to support you and provide resources.

Below are some videos introducing PECS, as well as a link to information on the PECS website.
