Welcome to West Gate School Welcome to West Gate School

West Gate School is a special school for pupils aged from 4-19 years who have a very wide range of learning difficulties and disabilities. The school opened in 2006 following the merger of two former special schools, Emily Fortey and Piper Way, situated on Glenfield Road in West Leicester. The West Gate Learning Centre based at New College Leicester was opened in 2011 with a focus on providing life skills and employability for our students.

We have the Local Authority’s only DCSF approved specialist autism provision. The autism provision was inspected and accredited in July 2012, for both primary and secondary aged pupils by the National Autistic Society (NAS) and was re-accredited after review in June 2015. We constantly reflect and review our good autism practise in our drive for continual improvement.

In September 2012 we became a Trust school by joining the Well Trust, in partnership with several other educational institutes across the country.

As part of the schools broader role within the City, the City of Leicester Association of Special Schools (CLASS) and The Schools Development Alliance for Learning in Leicester. The Headteacher sits on the Trust Board for the New College Leicester and the schools work collaboratively to provide for pupils with SEN and is also a West Gate Best Practice School for Person Centred Reviews and is the national lead in the Parent Leadership Programme. It is also expected to become a National Hub for SAQ.

The school is a vibrant, friendly and welcoming community with a strong positive ethos. We have a skilled and dedicated staff team who are deeply committed to providing the best possible education and care for all our pupils.

In late 2014 the school moved into a brand new building as part of the exciting Building Schools for the Future programme in Leicester City. For more information about this please click here.
